What Seeds to Start in April in Zone 7

April is here and that means garden season is here, yay! If you’re new to gardening and are wondering “What seeds to start in April?” then I’ve got you! If you’ve got some experience and depending on where you are (and how motivated you are) you may have even started seeds in February! And if you can transplant in April that’s wonderful, but for me here in northeast Arkansas zone 7, we can’t transplant small plants until early May! So in April we’re getting going on direct sowing, enjoying beautiful weather and watching all those brown, naked oak trees start to green up again!

Get your bird feeders ready!

It’s that time of year where more birds are coming back so it’s a good time to deep clean and restock all of your bird feeders! Hummingbirds are a bit behind other birds but they’ll be here soon so let’s be ready for them!

Willy Nilly Sowing Flower Seeds

You don’t always have to perfectly sow seeds in a seed tray in a greenhouse or even in your garden in order to have success! You can sometimes throw random seeds all over your garden and as long as you keep a watchful eye when hand weeding that area in the coming months, you very well could have some germinate and grow for you! So pick a spot that you’ll remember to keep an eye on, maybe a perennial flower that won’t get huge but will love the location you’re putting them and GIVE IT A TRY! If you have done this before, comment below which seed varieties and did you have success? I’ve done this with squash, watermelon, tomatoes, dianthus, sunflowers, etc. Flowers are great seeds to start in April!

Fertilize your Berries!

If you have existing grapes, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries in your garden, NOW is the time to fertilize them PRIOR to them putting on their new growth for the spring! This benefits the plants a lot more to get that shot of plant food prior to pushing all that new growth!

Keep an eye out for random (and predictable) cold snaps and frosts all throughout April! You’ll want to keep an eye on the 7 day and daily weather forecast starting now all the way up to first frost in Oct/Nov if you’re an avid gardener like myself OR just want to maximize your growing season this year!

These seeds are cold loving plants and can be direct sowed in your garden or raised beds if you have your soil prepared. These are the seeds to start in April, right in the ground.

  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Swiss Chard
  • Kolhrabi
  • Cabbage
  • Leaf Lettuce
  • Mustard Greens
  • Collards
  • Turnips
  • Radishes
  • Spinach
  • Bunching Onions
  • Peas

You can be starting warm loving seeds indoors! These guys do not love the cold and will thrive in our warm summers so they need some protection the next 4-6 weeks until all chances of frost are gone! So these guys you’ll either need to start in a greenhouse, indoors, under a grow light or wait and buy retail seedlings in May! These are the seeds to start indoors for summer only.

  • Tomatoes
  • Peppers
  • Okra
  • Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Melons
  • Watermelons
  • Eggplants

Other Tips!

If you started seeds any time in February or April, likely your little babies will be ready to be potted up right now if you haven’t done it yet! You want to give brand new seedlings 4-5 weeks to grow and build up a good root system before attempting to do this and you also want to keep in mind that you will likely only pot up a seedling 2-3 times before they’re going into the ground in your garden!

This is a great time of year to plant new large trees, fruit trees and shrubs! We personally get a good amount of rainfall in April and our March winds have died down so this is a wonderful month for new plants to get settled in and get a really great start!

April is also a great time for planning any landscaping projects you may want to tackle this year. I’ll tell you the advice I can never seem to take myself and that is, don’t try to take on too many projects for the year that will cause you to stay so busy in the garden that you don’t make time to enjoy it!

If you’re growing brassicas (broccoli, cabbage and kale) then you NEED to cover them. The cabbage moth and flea beetle love these plants even more than you do, yes really! You can attempt to grow these without landscape fabric but it’s really affordable and a complete life changer! Here is a link to one I’ve used for years and get on Amazon for a very reasonable price!

3 Exercises for a Nice Butt if you have a Desk Job

Thanks to computers, video games, TV, and the internet (of course), more and more jobs are being done at a desk. This makes it hard to burn calories and keep fit while you’re working. You sit in the office all day and when you come home it’s to your computer or a TV. No wonder the US obesity rate is skyrocketing. But hold on a second. For those of us who work at a desk, are there things we can do at the office to help us get fit or stay fit without going to a gym and breaking a sweat? The answer is, of course, yes.

Here are three exercises for legs and those great buns of steel that you want but don’t think you’ll ever get with a desk job. Do these exercises on alternating days, and you will be giving your legs an exceptional workout.

Now let’s set some ground rules first.

Stand up.

There should be no slouching in the chair, leaning to one side or another in this office space.

You will also take the stairs whenever there is the option to, and no sitting on the escalators.

And of course, try and stand when you can. Standing burns calories because you need to use your muscles in order to stand. Sitting destroys them.

Now back to the exercises.

Glute Bridges

To perform this exercise, lay on the ground on your back. Place your feet flat on the ground around a foot away from your butt. Begin to raise your hips to create a straight line from your knees to the shoulders. The most effective way to do this exercise is to really concentrate on squeezing the glutes as tight as you can and imagining they are pushing your hips up; hold this top position for 2-5 seconds. This exercise can also be performed a number of ways to increase intensity, such as one leg at a time or on to a bench with weight placed on the hip flexors.

Raise and lower the hips in a bridging exercise. This is a great exercise to help people who just can’t feel the glutes working in other exercises. The bridge, which targets the hamstrings as well as the glutes, has been found to provide one of the highest readings of muscle activation in a study by the American Council on Exercise.

Squats

To perform a bodyweight squat with proper form, start by standing with your feet shoulder width apart. Put your arms out in front of you and then begin to lower your body by bending your knees and pushing your hips back as if you were going to sit in a chair. Try to lower yourself so that your thighs are parallel to the ground and your knees are directly over your feet. The lower back should remain slightly arched and your head should face forward. Now your bodyweight is loaded on your heels, so the key is to push from your heels when standing back up. A great way to perfect this is to practice in front of a mirror and concentrate on pushing from the heels and using the glutes to stand back up. This will make sure you are loading the glutes properly.

Squeeze your glutes and stand back up.

To make proper squats, doing them correctly is very important. Tabitha of BFT recommends her clients to work with a kitchen chair pushed against the wall for balance. Another way to work with good form is to practice doing a squat by pretending to sit, then getting back up without sitting on a chair.

Lunges

When you lunge, keep your knee in line with your ankle. Go low to recruit the glutes and avoid adding too much quad muscle. Static lunges are a great exercise because you can really go deep and get good glute activation if you have correct technique. Walking lunges are also excellent for the butt and great if you have tight hip flexors. The glute of the back leg is put under great stretch and has to contract hard to bring you back up, helping to increase range of motion in the hips.

The added benefit here is increased hip flexibility and for some, this alone increases the booty pop and makes the butt look perkier. Stance and also cause poor posture and low back pain from underdeveloped glute muscles in these individuals. In addition, the sitting phase of the pulse will give the quads a brief rest when they are fatiguing from the wall sit position, changing the focus to the quads which is something we want to avoid to keep this an effective butt exercise.

Exercise is crucial for physical and emotional wellness. Working from a desk job can be an obstacle to remaining in good condition since there are various temptations to avoid. Desk jobs are infamous for adding to a widening waistline and an increasing cellulite belly, however many of us people with sedentary jobs are mostly concerned with the effects on our lower body, particularly how to avoid saggy buttocks. This focus does not exclude the importance of overall body fitness and the great ideas presented on other parts of this site – maintaining tone and fitness in the entire body is crucial for an overall attractive and healthy appearance, and spot reducing fat or increasing definition in one part of the body is not possible, as much as we wish it was.

Unfortunately we just cannot choose where the fat is going to be taken from, or where the muscle will be the first to tone. But spot treating a problem area is feasible and potentially fixable. Rest assured that if you are someone with a desk job and have noticed a change for the worse in the shape or size of your buttocks, you are not imagining things. Muscle bulk decreases quickly without use, and low blood flow to the muscle and high fat in the surrounding areas can cause degradation in muscle quality and skin tone. This is not a life sentence however, since muscle strength and tone can be improved with targeted exercise, and many aspects of the desk job can be counteracted with a few habitual changes.

It’s my belief that fitness should not be a source of stress to oneself, and a habit should be both manageable and enjoyable. Therefore only exercises that can be done with minimal or no equipment, and are contractible under the constraints of bad weather or busy schedule, have been posted on this site. Once exercise becomes a chore the chance of quitting becomes high. The above 3 exercises alone can be a good start to maintaining lower body tone, and should in no way be felt as a complete routine. They are no nonsense, and will require little thought to remember, freeing mental resources for anyone super busy. Each has its own specific trait, so if one is particularly enjoyed or found beneficial, it may be later incorporated into an entire routine targeting all muscle groups.

3 Awesome Cocktail Recipes for a Spring Party

Spring has sprung and it’s time to start thinking about planning spring and summer parties and gatherings! If you’re like me then you probably love spring and love hosting! So while I was researching for myself I wanted to share some 3 awesome cocktail recipes for a spring party, because they’re GREAT!

Mint, Lime & Wine Drink!

This drink is best when you use the flat soda near the end of a two liter…unless you plan on drinking 12 oz of Sprite in which case this is your lucky day. Begin by muddling the mint, sugar, and juice from the two limes at the bottom of a large glass. If you’re not familiar with the process of muddling, it essentially means to smash the mint leaves about a bit in order to release the flavor. You don’t need a proper muddler to do this, I actually found a small, blunt wooden object in the shape of a honey dipper to work perfectly. After this, add a shot of rum and ice, then fill the rest of the glass with the soda. Give it a quick stir and enjoy! Mmm, this one is definitely a crowd pleaser. I’m going to be serving these at my next spring party for sure!

Recipe

-12 oz of Sprite or Seven-up

-6 to 7 fresh mint leaves

-1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar

-1 to 2 limes

-3 to 4 shots of white rum

assorted wine bottles
Photo by Chris F on Pexels.com

When I think of spring and summer flavors, I tend to stay away from the darker liquors and pull out the white rums and tequilas. Then, I add a bit of fruit and something fizzy, and voila! Light, refreshing cocktails that are perfect for the coming warm months. This recipe actually comes from my friend’s recent party, and one taste made me so curious about its ingredients that I nearly had to dismantle her kitchen trying to figure it out. I didn’t get the exact proportions, but after some careful experimentation, I’d say it’s pretty close.

Strawberry, Mint & Rum Mojito

Summer is almost here and in the south it can be HOT like summer, in the spring! This delicious strawberry mojito is perfect for a hot day. It’s a really easy recipe and is a little different from the standard mojito. The recipe uses rum but can be made as a non-alcoholic drink, just exclude the rum and add more soda water.

Recipe

– 5 large strawberries, hulled

– 10 fresh mint leaves

– 1/2 a lime, cut into 4 wedges

– 2 tbsp sugar

– Ice

– 1.5 oz white rum

– Soda water

Instructions:

1. Place strawberries in a glass, add the lime wedges and sugar, then muddle it together to release the lime juice and dissolve the sugar.

2. Add the mint leaves to the glass and muddle with the strawberries and lime to release the mint flavor.

3. Half fill the glass with ice, then pour over the rum. 4. Top the glass up with soda water, stir the drink, and garnish with a strawberry and slice of lime.

Elderflower & Mint Drink | Non-alcoholic

To be a good host you always want to include a non-alcohol option for your guests! Try this unique combination of elderflower and mint!

Recipe

-2 cups of sparkling water, club soda or sprite

-3 tbsp elderflower

-ice cubes

-small handful mint leaves

-twist of lemon rind

Directions:

Method to make this is very simple. Pour the sparkling water into 2 low-ball glasses, then add some elderflower cordial to taste. Toss in a few ice cubes, the mint leaves and a twist of lemon rind, then stir gently. Serve straight away.
